Characterizing the glacier surge dynamics in Yarkand basin, Karakoram using remote sensing

چکیده

The Karakoram region contains a large number of surge-type glaciers, but few surging glaciers have been investigated by surface displacement and DEM differencing. paper presents the surge dynamics one unnamed glacier in Yarkand basin, between 2000 2019 using satellite imagery (e.g., Landsat Sentinel 2). Also, multiple high-resolution DEMs HMA Cartosat 1) were used to estimate mass transfer from reservoir zone receiving zone. differencing exhibit maximum thickening lower was ~190 ± 31 m whereas thinning upper ?17 2018 2016. gained 256 143 × 106 m3 ice 2011. than 0.07 0.02 d?1 quiescent phase 2011 it reached ~5 0.3 active (autumn 2015). terminus retreated ?765 89 1978 2016 advanced +681 57 during 2016–2019. This analysis indicate that gradual increase about four years before onset surge, long (three years) slow termination corroborate partially thermally controlled Svalbard-type surge.

The 2015 Surge of Hispar Glacier in the Karakoram

The Karakoram mountain range is well known for its numerous surge-type glaciers of which several have recently surged or are still doing so. Analysis of multi-temporal satellite images and digital elevation models have revealed impressive details about the related changes (e.g., in glacier length, surface elevation and flow velocities) and considerably expanded the database of known surge-type ...

A surge of North Gasherbrum Glacier, Karakoram, China

Between 2003 and 2007, North Gasherbrum Glacier on the northeastern slope of the Karakoram mountains in Asia underwent a dramatic acceleration, during which a velocity wave propagated down the glacier. There was a significant transfer of ice from up-glacier downstream, which resulted in a strong surface elevation increase over the lower tongue, but only a moderate advance of the glacier snout. ...

Glacier Changes in the Susitna Basin, Alaska, USA, (1951-2015) using GIS and Remote Sensing Methods

The Susitna River draining from the highly glacierized Central Alaska Range has repeatedly been considered a potential hydro-power source in recent decades, raising questions about the effect of glacier changes on the basin’s river runoff. We determine changes in the glacier area (1951–2010), elevation (1951–2010, 1951–2005 and 2005–2010), equilibrium line altitude (ELA, 1999–2015), and accumul...

Surge dynamics in the Nathorstbreen glacier system, Svalbard

Nathorstbreen glacier system (NGS) recently experienced the largest surge in Svalbard since 1936, and this was examined using spatial and temporal observations from DEM differencing, time series of surface velocities from satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and other sources. The upper basins with maximum accumulation during quiescence corresponded to regions of initial lowering. Initial s...

Glacier mapping from multi-temporal optical remote sensing data within the Brahmaputra river basin

Glacier distribution and glacier changes were investigated in the Upper Brahmaputra River Basin using remote sensing and GIS in order to determine the influence of melting glaciers on the long-term runoff of the Brahmaputra River (EU-project BRAHMATINN). Current glacier distribution and glacier changes since the 1970/80s were mapped using multi-temporal optical remote sensing data from the Land...
